Waste Management/Fairfield Beautification Committee April - May 2007 Events
Jazzing Up Jefferson County - "It's Music To Our Eyes"
Partners: Waste Management of Iowa, Inc.; Keep Iowa Beautiful; City of Fairfield; Fairfield Beautification Committee; and Jefferson County.
Five organizations have partnered for this unique, musically-themed beautification partnership that has made a difference in the image of both the rural and urban areas of Jefferson County in April and May 2007. This project is part of a new"Corporate Volunteer / Employee Program" of Keep Iowa Beautiful that focuses on matching volunteer talents and leadership of various business partnersin community enhancement projects.
The four weekend projects included:
1. The"Street-Sweeper's Ball" clean up and beautification project targeting the downtown and city square area of Faifield; Saturday, April 14th from 10 a.m. - noon. Waste Management provided carts for trash and a collection truck. A local radio station broadcast music from the square gazebo. A gift drawing for volunteers was hosted by local businesses. The city fire department assisted by washing down alleys and streets prior to the event.
2. The "Jefferson County Stomp" rural road revitalization through the cleanup of an illegal dump site took place on Saturday, April 14th with the help of Jefferson County staff.
3. "Bag Ladies Talking Trash" program for school assemblies at each elementary school in Fairfield; April 17-20th with a celebration day on Earth Day, April 22nd at Jefferson County Park.
4. "Brush with Jazz" painting of the railroad overpass over Highway 1, north of downtown; Saturday, May 5th. Paint spraying was completed by Waste Management volunteers. Lifts for the painters were provided by Schaus Vorhies.
